COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
I am involved with a large number of local community and residents
association and have supported them in a wide range of problems affecting
the area - in particular on the planning front where I am opposed to the
very worrying trend of over development.
I am chair of the Friends of
Bangor Community Hospital Committee which generally supports our local
hospital and which, over a ten-year period, has raised some £100,000 to
help improve conditions for its patients. I also I serve on the Omnibus
Committee which deals with problems affecting the disabled in the area -
for example transport facilities. I have a keen interest in the arts and am
a member and supporter of a number organisations - e.g. Bangor Drama Group
and its annual festival, as well as Bangor Operatic Society and the Helen’s
Bay Players.
PERSONAL BACKGROUND
Behind the active local politician there is a real person who leads a full
and satisfying life. I am married to a former senior civil servant and have
two grown up children both of whom are chartered accountants. My son, his
wife and family live outside London where they are happily married with
three young children. My daughter and husband, also happily married with
one little girl, live somewhat further a-field in Mozambique - but we still
manage to see them on a reasonably regular basis. I enjoy the theatre,
eating out, and socialising with a wide circle of friend outside politics
who take care to ensure that my feet are kept firmly on the ground. I love
to travel - but not at the rate - payer’s expense! - and when I can find
the time like nothing better than to get out for a hard days work in the
garden.
